The IT Dream
The dream of Information Technology (IT) was
always to help firms achieve its goals more efficiently.
Efficiency means delivering
more products and services to your clients with fewer people.
An example where IT improves efficiency and helps save lives
and reduce costs is an HMO in California -
MSNBC - Kaiser bucks the HMO trend.
The linchpin of IT success in
medium and large organizations is enabling all desktop users to
use all the firm's critical software programs. When your employees
cannot access your firm's critical software, your firm loses its
competitive advantage.
Keeping that advantage requires
that all critical programs are 'packaged'. This means that an
experienced and skilled software engineer accesses the program's
code and manually removes or alters code in the program which prevent
it from being used by all your employees - without interfering with
the program's intended purpose - MSI

Getting Started - Managing the Application
Packaging Effort
There are a number of steps to achieving
IT efficiency through application packaging.
Critical programs are identified.
A procedure is established to prepare those programs for the packaging
process. Programs are gathered and prepared for packaging. Standards
for successful packaging are drawn and agreed to. Programs are packaged.
Each package is tested for adherence to the standards and for compatibility
with the firm's hardware and software infrastructure. Mistakes are corrected.
Programs are distributed and used successfully.
Inside Versus Outside People
Experience, skill and mind set are critical
in selecting the right people for these jobs. Finding the right person for
the job is more important to a successful project than whether that person
is a salaried employee or an outside contractor.
Larger companies have salaried staff
which can be tasked with most of the steps listed above. Usually, however,
outside packagers like PTCS are called on to help with the more complex
programs and to reduce overhead.
Mid-size firms may ask an outside firm to
accomplish more of the necessary tasks.
Smaller companies may ask an outside firm to
help accomplish all those tasks.
